Electronic Music Production

SU510

This course combines the best bits of the official Apple Logic 101 course with practical arrangement and production techniques taken from our Music Production Diploma.

The inclusion of Native Instrument's plugins such as Massive, Battery, Kontakt, and others make this course particularly useful to anyone interested in producing electronic music with Logic Pro.

Electronic?

The techniques covered in this course can easily be applied to all styles of music, but in terms of sound, our focus will be all kinds of electronic music. This means experimental and glitch music but also house, techno, progressive, trance, dubstep, psytrance and any other form of dance music.

All these genres have one thing in common: the choice of sounds (the sound quality) is almost more important than the notes you play. So while there are many other places where you can learn Logic, here we look specifically at how to use Logic to produce proper tracks in your favourite style.

NOTE: if your main interest is in working with bands (acoustic drums, electric guitars, etc) you should consider the 'Foundations of Sound Engineering' course as the best option.

Check our other Summer courses and contact us to ask about discounts when you combine two or more classes.

Summer only!

This course is four weeks long, and it runs only in July and August.
If you miss this chance you can still combine any number of short courses at any time of the year or take the full Music Production 101 module in September to get the same knowledge (and more) but the cost and time format will be different.

Requirements: zero

You don't need to own a computer or have any knowledge of music theory at this stage.
The only requirement is to have a sincere interest in music, in the sense of having music ideas and a list of favourite artists.

Equipment used

Each student is allocated an iMac (latest model) with Logic Studio and Native Instruments Komplete installed, a midi keyboard and audio interface. Students wishing to work on their own laptops are welcome to bring them to the class.

Course outcome

At the end of the course you will have produced a track (a remix of a commercial track or one original production) using Logic Pro 8, in combination with additional samples and plugins. You will have a good understanding of programming drums, bass, editing vocals, sampling bits from other records and creating your own unique sounds.
While there is no limit to how much more you can study and learn, we expect that you will be already able to start and finish your own productions, creating CDs or mp3 for everyone to hear.

Skills For Life

A few years ago you could get a job just by having the right equipment (not many people could afford a recording studio) or a piece of paper (when studying was a privilege for the very few). Now every laptop is a recording studio, and a university degree is considered just a starting point.
What makes you stand apart then, what makes YOU special? It's not what you own, but what you can do.

Equipment gets old, skills are for life, make the right investment today.
