Production and Arrangement with Ableton Live 8

AL201

This course is the ideal continuation of Live 101 and it covers a more in depth use of the effects, instruments, mixer and automation for music production. Turning a fresh idea that was put together in a few minutes in to a polished track takes a lot more knowledge than just balancing the levels, and Ableton's Live compatibility with third-party plugins and the ability to work both as a Rewire host and slave make it all possible.

Course Outline

Day One

  • Advanced techniques and tricks.
  • New in 8 - Looper, Vocoder, Grooves, Markers etc.
  • Routing + Rewire.
  • Racks - Chaining etc.
  • Clip launching - Follow Action and Legato.
  • Live beat programming and mashing. Beat Repeat tricks, Supatrigga etc.
  • Completely freeform jamming. Using "ApTrigga" to trigger samples from live drums.

Day Two

  • Production + Remix techniques.
  • Talk through a remix from start to finish discussing all production issues that come up.
  • Mastering with Ableton Live.
  • Discussion and demonstration of various performance setups / controllers etc.

About the Trainer

'Jakeone' is one half of Toob (their 2008 LP "Push Me Pull You" was described by Bleep.com as "the best leftfield pop album of the year").

Jakeone

Jake's new solo outing is a lo-fi, live take on techno, taking in influences fom across the electronic spectrum.

His live set involves manipulating chopped-up loops of his and others' tracks alongside a drum machine, bass synth, FX and the odd twisted vocal snippet. Recent gigs, including Edinburgh, Glasgow and London's new high-profile electronic night Balance, have been met with a rapturous response.

He has also just turned in belting remixes for Bomb the Bass (with whom he collaborated on 2008's Future Chaos LP) and Process label-mate Mark O Sullivan. Both out this winter.
